Deerhound Club Northern Limited Show 2016 Critique

Firstly I'd like to thank the Deehound Club for inviting me to judge at this show, a real privilege, and the organisers and exhibitors for giving me such a lovely entry.

PD: 3 (1):

1: McKinnon's Almondbank Real Deal McNeil for Fingon. Sweet 9 month old boy who thoroughly enjoyed himself in the ring! Nice head & expression, dark eye. Good forechest and plenty of bone. Long neck leading into well laid shoulders. Nice rise over loin  and good bend of stifle. Well muscled for his age. Erratic on the move but saw just enough to see lots of promise. BPIS.

2: McIntyre's Almondbank What a Boy McCoy. Litter brother of winner, and much the same applies. Nice head and expression, good deep chest and  plenty of bone. A little flat on the topline just now and less well muscled than his brother but was much more settled and moved well with a steady true stride

Novice Dog: 2:

1: Donaldson's Eileanirgh King Whisperer. Well balanced 15 mth old boy with a lovely head and expression. Good forechest and lovely long neck. Beautiful topline with lovely fallaway into strong quarters. Nice deep chest but a little straight in the shoulder at present but he still has time on his side. Nice harsh coat. Moved with  good reach and drive covering the ground with a good long stride.

2: McKinnon's Almondbank Real Deal McNeil for Fingon

Special Beginners Dog: 3:

1 Heap's Leoch Jamie of Fintalloch. a large rangy dog with a good head and expression. Good length of neck leading into well laid shoulders. Nice spring of rib and strong loin. Well muscled but a little straight in the stifle. On the move he strode out well covering the ground with a good reach.

2: Seamens' Arrachogaidh Bhaidenach. Smaller dog with a very sweet head and lovely small ears. Well laid shoulders and good depth of chest. Lovely low hocks which drove him well from the rear on the move. Carrying a little weight however which did make him a little sluggish.

3: Donaldson's Eileanirgh King Whisperer

PGD: 5 (2):

1: Constantine's Kaleginy The Forester.Beautifully presented 21 mth dog. Lovely head with nice neat ears and soft expression. Good bone throughout, nice depth of chest and plenty of spring of rib. Good bend of stifle and adequately muscled at rear. Low hocks with good length from hip to hock. Shapely dog overall though could do with a little more length along the loin. On the move he  was fluid and steady, covering the ground well. Challenged hard for BD. RBD.

2: Sharp's Killoeter Skye. Large dog of different type to 1. Good length of neck leading into good shoulders. Adequate spring of rib. Good length overall and nice low hocks though could do with a little more muscle at rear. Nice harsh coat.

3. Heap's Leoch Jamie of Fintalloch

OD: 7 (1):

1: Sharp's Rosslyn Qonnor. Lovely mature dog with plenty of substance. Handsome male head, good length of neck leading into well laid shoulders. Lovely deep chest and good forechest. Very nice well balanced topline which he held on the move. Nice fallaway into strong, well muscled quarters with good bend of stifle. Good feet and a nice harsh coat. On the move he was strong and true with good reach and drive. Overall a strong, workmanlike dog. BD, BOS, RBoB.

2: Cunningham's Teviotdale Banner Blue. Another good strong dog, different type from 1. Pale coated and lovely overall shape. Good shoulders, nice spring of rib and a good deep chest. Well muscled quarters with low hocks and a good bend of stifle. Another strong workmanlike dog who moved with plenty of drive. Just prefered the overall shape and balance of 1.

3: Cartmell's Drawing Down the Sun


VD: 0

PB: 4 (1):

1: McIntyre's Almondbank Arya. 9 months old, sweet, well balanced girl. Nice neat ears and a dark eye. Good shoulder, adequate spring of rib and lovely tuck-up giving her a very pretty profile. Nice bend of stifle but a little high in the hock at the moment. A good harsh coat. Movement was steady and true with promising reach and drive. BPB.

2: Gow's Rathcreevagh Hailey Geal of Anmialchu. Striking blonde 11 month old, very well muscled and fit for her age. Lovely dark ears, eyes and nose set against the blonde colouring. Beautiful shapely girl in profile, deep chest and good tuck up. Well laid shoulders, adequate rib and good low hocks. Could do with more bone throughout. A little unsettled on the move but when steady strode out with a good reach.

3: Seamens' Cotherstone Surpresa to Arrachogaidh

Novice Bitch: 2 (1):

1: Johnston's Killoeter Shirra. 2 year old bitch with a nice dark, harsh coat. Lay of shoulder adequate, good deep chest but could do with more in the forechest. Nice topline with good rise over loin. Steady on the move with adequate reach and drive.

Special Beginners Bitch: 3:

1: Lindsay's Celticmoon Shadow Magic at Silverthyme. Strong, workmanlike bitch. Good forechest and depth of chest. Good spring of rib, nicely shaped tuck up and good rise over the loin falling away nicely to the quarters giving a very pleasing outline. Good bone throughout. Strong, well muscled quarters and low hocks. Move well with good reach and drive.

2: Heap's Leoch Juniper of Fintalloch. Shapely dark bitch of finer bone and type. Lovely expression and nice neat ears. Adequate shoulders but nice topline which she held on the move. Could do with a little more bend of stifle. On the move needs to tighten the pasterns but covered the ground well.

3: Johnstone's Killoeter Shirra

PGB: 8 (2):

1 Jackson's Killoeter Reay. A lovely shapely bitch who caught my eye from the start and didn't disappoint on closer examination. A good head with a dark eye and neat ears. Strong neck leading into very well laid shoulders. Good forechest and depth of chest. Strong loin and excellent fallaway giving her her beautiful shape. Very strong, well muscled quarters and nice low hocks. She moved with a good forward reach and powerful drive from the rear. Like the PGD, she challenged hard for BB. RBB

. 2: McIntyre's Hillmorton Hazel. Very different type, rangy and well muscled but less bone than 1. Strong neck, good shoulders and well muscled quarters. Held her shapely topline on the move. A very elegant bitch. Movement was sound with good forward reach.

3: Lindsay's Celticmoon Shadow Magic at Silverthyme

OB: 10 (3):

1. Robertson's Chuilinn Windflower. Beautiful, large, strong, workmanlike pale grey bitch. Beautiful head and soft expression. Excellent lay of shoulder and good bone throughout. Good spring of rib and lovely deep chest. Shapely topline with good rise over loin. Lovely fallaway and strong, well muscled quarters with good bend of stifle and low hocks. Movement was strong and true with excellent reach and drive. She flew round the ring with verve and with ease, which won her the day. BB, BiS.

2: Gillie's Dorrator Garvey. Smaller bitch than winner but with good bone and plenty to like. Good deep chest and good forechest. Nice spring of rib. Shapely topline held well on the move. Good strong, well muscled quarters. Movement was strong and true with good reach and drive.

3: Constantine's Cotherstone Islay Mist of Kaleginy

VB: 4 (1):

1: Robertson's Chuilinn Afra. Very fit and sprightly nine and a half year old, shone in the ring, thoroughly enjoying the attention. Pale grey, very shapely bitch. Lean overall but with good bone. Good shoulders, strong quarters and moved beautifully with excellent reach and drive and full of verve.

2: Crossan & Foote's Cusidh Caol Muile. Larger, very  solid  8 year old with good bone, well laid shoulders, good spring of rib and a good strong loin. Very shapely and workmanlike. Movement ok but less sprightly than 1 and a little sluggish at times.

3: Lindsay's Kinnauld Rogart Craggie
